Time for Canada Geese

August 28, 2016

Another sign that fall is approaching is the pretend migration of this area’s Canada geese. Their raucous honking and v-shaped flight patterns are all for show (or something). They never leave but spend the winters here.

  1. Like clockwork, I see a flock leave the river and head “somewhere” each morning at or around 7:00.

  2. Nice photo – I am ambivalent about them, because the New York metro area is overrun with them,. There are places – parks, campuses – you can’t walk because of the droppings. But better too many than too few. Out here they’re not a nuisance, and I’ve been hearing them in the evenings lately. Lovely sound, and how can you not love the V’s?

    • They tend to be more a nuisance here, but I do like the V’s, and sometimes the sound. But yuch for those droppings. I remember a few years back standing in my driveway in Sarasota and being aware of large birds flying over my head. I was puzzled that I didn’t hear any honking until I remembered where I was. They were pelicans, as I could see when I looked up.

      • Certain things get very ingrained, don’t they?

        • Yes, and without our knowing. There’s a lesson there, isn’t there.
