Woods from the Edge of the Road 3

December 4, 2016

This is an osage orange (Maclura pomifera) tree, one of a line of them planted between the old farmer’s field and the road. If you click through to Wikipedia’s entry on this tree, be sure to scroll down to “Uses.”

  1. They are interesting trees! I like the way the fallen fruit looks in this picture.

    • They tend to be very branch-y. If you clicked through to Wikipedia, you know that that’s one reason farmers planted them. If planted close enough to each other, they could act as a fence to keep in the livestock. Did you see two of the “oranges” still caught in the tree?

  2. Yes, I remember that about Osage oranges being planted that way – somewhere, (in NY I think) I know I’ve seen it done. So those guys are caught there, and not on their stems? Funny when that happens!
