Cross-Gartered Traffic Cones and Friends

January 12, 2019

On the same day I harvested the dumpster photographs for the previous post, I came across a few batches of traffic cones to add to my collection.

  1. I especially like the cones with the “Do not cross” tape that makes them look like party hats.

    • I’ve never seen such fancy traffic cones. Glad you like them, Clare!

  2. Wow, they are scruffy-looking characters, aren’t they? I am always attracted to the flighty bits like the caution tape (anything that blows in the wind!); I’m glad these have so much of it. Favorites, hmm. #2 for the angle, the composition, and the way the leaves contrast with the cones. #3 and #4 for the party atmosphere that you conveyed so well. #7 and then #10 especially, for the dignity the cones suddenly take on, as if they were serious sculptures at a museum. The scuff marks on #10 are lovingly rendered. 🙂 What a day that was!

    • It was an extraordinary day. Sometimes a photography day is only good for the experience, the practice, with little to be happy about in the download. While I never regret a good practice session, I’m happiest when the haul is good, too. There’s more to come. Thanks for your ever-astute observations of my observations, Lynn.

      • That was so well put, Linda, and true. There are days when maybe one or two photos are interesting, and then there are days when things shine. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead, and may more excitement lie around the corner….

        • Thanks, Lynn. Some of the photos waiting in the wings are more subtle, maybe not exciting at all; I hope they will still please.

    • Thank you, Jürgen. I like how old cones are used over and over, no matter how scuffed and beat up they become.

  4. WOW! You have struck gold (or orange) with these shots, Linda. I admire your ability to see the photographic potential in these common objects. Cones with personality!

    • As I said the last time I posted photographs of traffic cones, I’m not sure I remember what got me started on them. Maybe it was the (unfortunately out-of-focus) Wicked Traffic Cone of the South. Now, of course, they stand out to me as loudly as—uh—dumpsters.
